The Kangaroo
Of all the animals in Australia, the kangaroo is the most famous. In fact, it is to this continent as the elephant is to India. Next to the kangaroo is the duck-billed platypus.
The kangaroo has a very powerful tail and hind legs which enable it to move along quickly. This movement is made up of a series of long jumps. So active is the kangaroo that it can move at a high speed to cover a long distance within short time.
The most interesting point about this creature is the way it carries its young ones in a pouch on its belly, rather like the West African monkey. Though, the difference is that the young monkey does not stay in a pouch but holds fast to its mother with its arms and legs as she moves from branch to branch.
The forelegs of the kangaroo are short and do not touch the ground during movements. The Bushmen of Australia, though they are the most primitive natives in the world, are very fond of this animal. These people have strange beliefs and customs but they are very kind to the kangaroo.
